She has done a splendid job of creating a highly readable and enjoyable account of a terrible time.

The title is perhaps a misnomer because it implies a strong religious connection, and religion doesn’t play into these people’s lives. This is one of the all time classic military auto-biographies, written by one of the most successful and most controversial of American Civil War generals. One man, who couldn't bear to be thought a coward, kept cracking, and being evacuated, then coming back. The abusiveness could be a cycle, passed down from generation to generation. I first read this book as a teenager, and would highly recommend it to people of any age.
